Tax diary: the dates that matter in October and November 2026

Here are the main dates for sole traders, contractors and VAT-registered businesses over the next two months.

October

  • 5 October: register for Self Assessment if you are new
  • 7 October: VAT returns and payments for quarters ended 31 August
  • 19 October: monthly CIS returns due
  • 22 October: CIS deductions due if paying electronically
  • 28 October: Autumn Budget
  • 31 October: paper Self Assessment returns (a Saturday)

November

  • 7 November: VAT returns and payments for quarters ended 30 September (a Saturday, so file early)
  • 19 November: monthly CIS returns due
  • 22 November: CIS deductions due (a Sunday, so allow extra time)

Where a date falls on a weekend, aim to file and pay a couple of days earlier. Your own VAT quarter may differ from the one above.
