And many other trades

Tax efficient, by design

Our job is to make sure you pay the right amount of tax, and no more. We do that within the rules, month in and month out, not in a rush at deadline time.

Every allowable expense

Tools, van costs, workwear, training and more, claimed in full and properly recorded.

Every allowance and relief

Capital allowances on kit and vehicles, CIS deductions credited back, and pension tax relief.

The right structure

We check whether being a sole trader or a limited company leaves you better off, and review it as you grow.

Expenses we make sure you claim

Every allowable expense you miss is money you hand to HMRC for no reason. Where costs are wholly and exclusively for your business, we claim them, and keep the records to back them up.

Vehicles and travel

  • Fuel, insurance, servicing, repairs, MOT and road tax for your van
  • Or simple mileage rates instead: 45p a mile for the first 10,000 business miles, then 25p
  • Travel between job sites and other temporary workplaces
  • Parking, tolls and congestion charges
  • Overnight accommodation on away jobs

Tools and equipment

  • Hand tools, power tools and small kit
  • Larger items such as machinery and vans through capital allowances, often claimable in full in the year you buy
  • Plant and equipment hire
  • Insurance for your tools

Materials and subcontractors

  • Materials bought for jobs
  • Subcontractor costs
  • Skip hire and waste disposal

Workwear and safety

  • Protective clothing: hard hats, boots, hi-vis and gloves
  • Branded work clothing
  • First aid and safety equipment
  • Everyday clothes do not qualify, so we keep this to what does

Running the business

  • Public liability and tool insurance
  • Trade body, scheme and registration fees such as Gas Safe, NICEIC and CSCS
  • Training and qualification updates
  • Phone, broadband, website, advertising and van signage
  • Accountancy and bank fees
  • Using your home as an office: a flat rate of £10 to £26 a month, depending on hours

Which costs qualify, and how much, depends on your circumstances. We check what applies to you before we claim.

Good to know for your trade

  • CIS. If contractors deduct tax from your pay, we make sure it is credited against your bill, and refunded where you have overpaid. See our CIS guide.
  • VAT. Registered for VAT, or heading that way? Construction has its own reverse charge rules. See our VAT guide.
  • Limited company? That does not make your accounts harder. We price on the work involved, not the structure.
  • Enquiry-ready. Monthly bookkeeping keeps every receipt and invoice in order, which makes any HMRC check far easier. See how we handle HMRC enquiries.

Tax and bookkeeping built for your trade

  • Monthly bookkeeping with your expenses tracked as you go
  • Self assessment or company accounts prepared and filed on time
  • CIS returns, refunds and gross payment status help
  • A forecast of your tax bill, so you can set money aside
  • Email and WhatsApp support, evenings and weekends included

Questions we are often asked

Can I claim for my van?

Yes, for the business use. If you also use it privately, only the business share counts. You can claim actual running costs with capital allowances on the purchase, or use simple mileage rates, but not both for the same vehicle. We work out which is better for you.

Can I claim travel to jobs?

Travel to a temporary workplace, such as a customer site, is generally allowable. Ordinary commuting to a regular base is not. We look at how you work and claim what qualifies.

What counts as work clothing?

Protective and safety clothing, and clothing branded with your business, usually qualify. Everyday clothes you could wear anywhere do not.

Is a limited company better for a tradesperson?

Sometimes, sometimes not. It depends on your profits, how you take money out and your plans. We compare both routes using your actual figures.
