Last chance to register for Self Assessment: 5 October
If you were newly self-employed, or had other untaxed income, during the 2025/26 tax year and you have not yet told HMRC, you need to register for Self Assessment by Monday 5 October 2026.
HMRC has also launched an improved online registration service through the personal tax account, which is meant to make the process quicker.
Who needs to register?
- Sole traders who earned more than £1,000 before expenses
- People with side hustles over the £1,000 trading allowance
- Landlords with untaxed rental income
- Anyone with untaxed tips, commission, savings interest, dividends or foreign income
What comes next?
Once registered, your 2025/26 return and any tax due must be in by 31 January 2027. Paper returns have an earlier deadline of 31 October 2026.
What if I miss it?
HMRC can charge a penalty for failing to tell it about a new liability, even where the tax itself is paid late. The penalty depends on how much tax is outstanding, so it is better to register now than to wait.
Left it late? Message us on WhatsApp and we can get you registered quickly.
